De Soto, Kansas - The school library at Lexington Trails Middle School received a $3000 competitive grant from the Northeast Kansas Library System (NEKLS). The grant will give students access to updated, diverse collections that support curricular and leisure reading. LTMS Librarian, Nikki Leisten, collaborated with the English Language Arts (ELA) teachers at LTMS to develop a list of fiction and nonfiction books that will support curriculum and are of high interest to students.
The goal of the NEKLS School Grant Program is to help school libraries renew and expand their print and electronic collections. The grant available in 2024 was open to any member school libraries in the northeast region of Kansas. NEKLS received 33 applications, and the committee selected 15 for funding, for a total of $51,000 in grant funds.
"School libraries deeply enrich the lives of students from pre-kindergarten through grade 12 and we are excited to hear about the results of these grant programs," shared Michael McDonald, Director of NEKLS.
